MGR –95 and MGR 77 was celebrated at Raja Annamalai Mandram on 5th August 2012 in Chennai with great enthusiasm and grand participation by fans. The function started in the morning at 10.30 with a gathering of all MGR Rasigar Mandrams. The Fan Organisations came from all over Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Karnataka, Kerala, Sri Lanka, France, Canada and Singapore. The Agenda of the meeting was to bring all fans under one roof and spread awareness about the Urimai Kural Magazine which has been doing commendable work in reviving the memories of Puratchi Nadigar MGR. Mr. K.P Ramakrishnan who was the stunt master and body guard of MGR spoke about his association with the Late Chief Minister MGR amongst a cheering crowd. He distributed mementos to the all the Fan Organisations that had gathered for the function.
In the evening, the celebration resumed with the bursting of crackers and garlanding the huge MGR cut outs. There was a display of rare stills from Mr. Murali’ s collection; which was inaugurated by Mr. K.P Ramakrishnan. The programme started with different look alikes of MGR performing dance items on his famous songs. The roaring applause which the performers received shows that popularity of MGR’s songs is still green in everyone’s memory. Special mention has to be made about the performance of Nammakal MGR who re-created the magic of MGR on stage.
The memorable evening was graced by yesteryear co-stars and associates of Pon Mana Chemmal like M.G.R Body Guard K.P. Ramakrishnan, Kanchana,M.G.Chakrapani’s Son Mr.M.C.Chandran Rajashree, CID Shakuntala,S.N. Parvathi, Thirudade Lakshmi, Jayanthi Kannapan (ALS Productions), Dance Master Thara, , Industrialist Mr. Antony . All the celebrities spoke about their close association and fond memories with MGR. Ms. Rajashree declared the souvenir open and handed over the first copy to Mr. M.G.C. Chandran (Son of M.C. Chakrapani).The show was hosted by an ardent Makkal Thilagam Fan Mr. Ravichandran from Tirupur. They were all then presented with MGR shields. Later in the evening there was an audio visual presentation from various rare movie clippings of MGR compiled by MGR’s Grandson MGCB.Pradeep.
All those who attended the function went home with nostalgic memories of the evergreen “King of the masses”.
